Abstract

本稿は、「2008年バイオベンチャー統計調査」（本研究プロジェクトのために調査票を再設計。回答企業309社）にもとづいて、日本のバイオベンチャーの参入時からの成長過程を分析する。本稿で明らかとなった重要な知見のいくつかは以下のとおりである。(1)企業の成長率は従業者規模ベースで平均15.6%（年率）と高い。特許出願の実績のある企業ほど成長しやすく、同時に、株式公開意欲も高い。また、設立 時に既にベンチャーキャピタルから資金調達している企業ほど成長しやすく、さらに、バイオベンチャーのうち、創薬ベンチャーが成長しやすい傾向がみられている。(2)バイオベンチャーのなかには売上高を上回る研究開発投資を行う企業も少なくなく、また、約7割の企業が米国特許を出願するなど、研究開発が企業成長の重要な源泉となっている。(3)約1割の企業が既に株式公開している、あるいは株式公開を予定しており、また、株式公開の最大の理由は研究開発などリスクを負担できる資金の調達となっており、適切な時期と条件で資本市場へのアクセス可能なことが成長への重要なインフラとなっている。(4)コア技術の出所を大学あるいは公的研究機関とするケースが合計で5割を超えており、経営者の約4割が博士号を取得しており、また、経営者の約２割が大学などの出身であるなど、サイエンスに基盤をおく企業の割合が高い。大学や公的研究機関の成果をシーズとする企業の割合は、2000年以降増加しており、1990年代後半以降の制度改革を反映していると考えられる。バイオベンチャーは、サイエンス・ベースの新規企業や新産業を育成するために、日本のイノベーション・システムを構築していくうえでの試金石になると考えられ、その動態についての深い調査と研究が引き続き重要といえる。
