Abstract

L'utilisation croissante des intrants industriels, pesticides et engrais, a permis la progression rapide des rendements agricoles au cours des dernières décennies. Mais les produits phytosanitaires sont, par nature, des toxiques. Aussi, peuvent-ils avoir des effets sur l'homme, la faune et la flore. Leur utilisation se heurte donc à deux contraintes : la préservation de la santé publique et la protection de l'environnement. Dès 1943, une procédure de contrôle de la mise en marché des produits phytosanitaires a été mise en place. Constamment aménagée au cours du temps, cette procédure s'avère efficace en ce qui concerne la protection de la santé des consommateurs. Toutefois, les observations des effets, en particulier de long terme, des pesticides sur l'environnement montrent que l'impact de leur utilisation massive a été sous-estimé.
