Abstract

a croissance économique est devenue intermittente, fugitive. À l'image du climat, elle alterne le chaud et le froid, les booms et les krachs. La crise du monde occidental doit beaucoup plus qu'on n'est généralement prêt à l'admettre à sa disparition. Que font les hommes politiques ? Comme les sorciers qui veulent faire tomber la pluie, ils lèvent les mains vers le ciel pour la faire venir, aiguisant le ressentiment des peuples quand elle n'est pas au rendez-vous. Mais que deviendrait la société moderne si la promesse d'une croissance perpétuelle s'avérait vaine ? Saurait-elle trouver d autres satisfactions, ou tomberait-elle dans le désespoir et la violence ? Préfèrera-t-elle vivre au-dessus de ses moyens, tant écologiques que psychiques, plutôt que d'y renoncer ? Telles sont les questions brûlantes posées par cet essai, qui nous entraine dans un surprenant voyage au c ur des mécanismes qui ont fait advenir la société moderne, de l'invention de la richesse à la révolution numérique.
