Abstract

The question of the relationship between control and trust has been widely tackled in the literature. In this paper, we focus on this relationship in the specific case of French pôle de compétitivité. The pôles de compétitivité are aimed at providing assistance to collaborative projects regrouping actors like big firms, research laboratories and small firms. Collaborations in this kind of projects show several specificities increasing the relevance of trust. Trust (or confidence) is necessary, for each partner, to enter a collaborative project: confidence in the capacity to meet targeted results, trust in partners' skills and loyalty,... Trust is thus essential for the four R&D collaborative projects we studied in the pole Minalogic. In this paper, we present findings from our study aimed at building performance measurement tools for Minalogic. As an important finding, we highlight the importance and the determinants of trust between partners. An important determinant is the formal control, even if its role should be adapted to the evolving needs during the project.
