Abstract

Secular modelling of the freight market. - This paper offers a freight model for France, which covers a one hundred and fifty years period (1841-1994). Three results can be emphasized from this cliometrics study. First, the elasticity of global traffic with respect to industrial production decreases after the First Worlds War. Then, the performances of the different modes of transport (road, railway, waterway) as regards to pricing and supply determine the market shares in the long-term. Finally, we fail to highlight an impact of trafic pressure on network development.
