Abstract

The implementation of an analysis methodology concerning the districts' social disparities within eight French urban areas, taking into account simultaneously income levels and social classes, allows, at the year 2000, to clarify the social specificity of territories, otherwise known at the communal level. Social heterogeneity between and inside the districts, as well as the spatial concentration of the richest quarters and the spatial scattering of underprivileged quarters, clearly account for the social stratification and hierarchical organisation of urban territories processes. The social photography obtained of urban areas then questions us on the changing and the future of the spatial splitting up in accordance with the different individuals' categories.
