Comparing Fourier and Translog specifications of multiproduct technology : evidence from an incomplete panel of French farmers

Abstract

Présentation d'une comparaison des performances explicatives des deux formes fonctionnelles Fourier et Translog à partir de données sur trois années en production de fruits. Leur technologie est ainsi résumée par deux productions (fruits et autres productions) et trois inputs agrégés. L'estimation est du type moindres carrés généralisés et porte sur le système constitué de la fonction de coût et des parts des inputs dans le coût. Les résultats mettent en évidence le fait que l'hétérogénéité présente dans les données traitées est mieux représentée par Fourier que Translog. Cela apparaît clairement lors de la comparaison des distributions des élasticités de substitution individuelles et de celle des complémentarités des outputs dans le coût de production. Ainsi, les deux formes fonctionnelles conduisent à des conclusions opposées quant à l'intérêt de la spécialisation de ces exploitations agricoles.
