Abstract

As pesticides are becoming a primary focus of studies due to their potentially harmful nature, this article examines the factors leading certain winegrowers to apply doses exceeding the official recommendations. Our approach is founded on an original methodology which matches four databases: the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN); the crop management practices survey (PK) in the winegrowing sector; the database which identifies authorised doses per input (e-phy); and climatic data (Météo France). Our sample contains 106 vineyards throughout France. Of these vineyards, 40% apply excessive doses with 10% applying markedly excessive doses. The vineyards are characterised by the quality of their production and a comfortable financial situation, nevertheless accompanied by an unfavourable climate.
