Abstract

Belong to the technological intelligence's field, this article wants to defend an original methodology to study an innovative field based on financial and regulatory information to improve the patent analysis. The analytical argument emphasizes the need to cross two readings: first, the close interaction between innovation and regulation, and secondly the central role of financial activities in the current innovation systems. This analytical framework is mobilized in a second time to study the case of laser ophthalmology. Two essential facts are clear in this analysis. Regulatory influence is useful to understand a major and recent trajectory of this field (the development of femtosecond laser) and without taking into account financial, patent data provide us with a very rough perception of opposing forces.
