Abstract

Qu'est-ce que consommer ? Dans une société de consommation, le consommateur est avant tout une figure abstraite mobilisée pour organiser la production et la distribution des marchandises. Les sciences sociales interprètent de deux façons l'acte de consommation. La " mise au travail " du consommateur renvoie directement à son exploitation. La " participation " du consommateur renvoie, quant à elle, à son émancipation. Nous verrons qu'il s'agit de notions d'actualité et qu'il est difficile de trancher entre ces deux perspectives. Aussi, nous proposons d'appréhender la consommation comme une activité co-élaborée, ce qui rend possible le repérage de ce qui relève de la mise au travail et/ou de la participation et permet, en même temps, de mieux tenir compte des enjeux empiriques sous-jacent.
