Automobile et automobilité : quelles évolutions de comportements face aux variations du prix des carburants de 2000 à 2008 ?

Abstract

La question de la dépendance aux produits pétroliers, notamment pour le secteur des transports, est aujourd'hui une préoccupation majeure. Comme indiqué dans le chapitre de prospective sur l'énergie fossile (Wingert+Hivert), les contraintes sur l'offre en ressources, et donc sur les prix, vont peser de plus en plus lourd sur une demande qui, au moins pour les transports, ne s'avère pas pour l'heure réellement moins dynamique. Au cours de la phase de " bumpy plateau ", la probabilité d'(au moins) un nouvel épisode de forte hausse des prix du pétrole et donc des carburants dans un avenir proche semble élevée. Dans ce contexte, où en est l'automobile ? Qu'en a-t-il été des comportements des utilisateurs (équipement et usage), face aux récents épisodes de flambée du prix des carburants, qui posent nombre de problèmes économiques et sociaux ? Les évolutions tendancielles assez lentes que nous connaissons sur le parc, en termes de structure (âge notamment) et d'usage, sont-elles infléchies, voire remises en cause de façon plus brutale par ces soubresauts ? La consommation de carburant s'ajuste-t-elle (rapidement ? exactement ? à la hausse comme à la baisse ?) sur ces évolutions de prix ? C'est en jetant un regard en arrière sur ce qui s'est produit depuis 2000 que nous analysons ici ces impacts qui ont pu récemment affecter notablement, mais aussi de façon différenciée, les comportements des automobilistes et ménages.
