La description : point aveugle de la recherche qualitative

Abstract

Ce texte se propose de montrer que la description est au centre de la recherche qualitative et de l'étude de cas et qu'elle en constitue l'originalité et la richesse par rapport aux méthodes quantitatives et de modélisation formelle. Si la description est paradoxalement dénigrée par la recherche qualitative elle-même, c'est qu'il doit exister de bonnes et de mauvaises descriptions, ces dernières sans doute plus nombreuses que les premières, et qu'il est donc crucial de comprendre ce que peut être une bonne description. Pour ce faire, il va falloir écarter un certain nombre de thèses répandues et erronées quant à la description, souvent marchant par paires de contraires (et illustrant une fois de plus que le contraire d'une thèse fausse est non pas une thèse vraie, mais une thèse tout aussi fausse).
