Abstract

Le développement des fabrications en grande série dans l'industrie au XXe siècle a amené des difficultés pour contrôler la qualité des produits fabriqués. Les produits étaient en trop grand nombre pour pouvoir être contrôlés individuellement ; parfois, le contrôle supposait leur destruction (munitions). D'autres fois encore, le contrôle nécessitait des opérations longues en laboratoire, qui ne permettaient pas de réagir rapidement pour corriger des erreurs constatées. Dans ce contexte, la statistique et le calcul des probabilités ont fourni des méthodes rationnelles pour contrôler la production sur échantillons. Les probabilités apportaient la possibilité de calculer le risque d'une mauvaise décision au vu d'un échantillon de taille donnée. Ainsi, pour juger de la qualité d'un lot, on prenait couramment un échantillon de 2% de la taille du lot, ce qui était beaucoup trop faible pour fonder un jugement valable. On a aussi redécouvert la loi de Poisson en s'apercevant que l'échantillon ne devait pas nécessairement être proportionnel à l'effectif du lot. Plusieurs méthodes sont ainsi apparues dans les années 1920 de façon indépendante dans différents pays industrialisés. Les mathématiques utilisées ne sont pas particulièrement nouvelles, et il semble qu'on aurait pu inventer cela bien avant. Ce sont donc très certainement les conditions économiques et industrielles qui ont poussé au développement de ces méthodes à cette époque précise. W.A. Shewhart (1891-1967) est celui qui a produit l'oeuvre la plus originale et la plus approfondie.
