Ainsi, apres avoir relate la formation des territoires francais (I) et mis notamment en exergue la transformation de l'espace en territoire, ce preliminaire decrit les divers processus de mutation des territoires de la France (II), puis presente l'organisation territoriale locale de la France contemporaine (III), en mettant l'accent sur le role, dans cette organisation territoriale, de la cooperation intercommunale, qui constitue l'objet central de la presente analyse.
