Le chomage genere-t-il le chomage? Le debat oppose les tenants d'une heterogeneite pure, eventuellement inobservable du statisticien, aux partisans d'une veritable relation de dependance des probabilites de sortie vis-a-vis de la duree de l'episode de chomage. A l'aide d'un modele simple, nous distinguons quatre arguments avances par la literature: l'heterogeneite ex ante, le signal lie a la duree du chomage, la demoralisation des chomeurs de longue duree, et la perte de capital humain lie a l'episode de chomage. Les implications en termes de politique economique sont egalement envisagees.
