Abstract

It is well known that populations in OECD countries will age rapidly over the next several decades. In this document, we examine the effects of population ageing on economic growth and the current account in the case of small open economies. We use endogenous-growth overlapping generation's models for seven OECD countries. Our results indicate that in the case of small open economies, population ageing could have beneficial effects on economic growth, but the rise in growth would depend on the pattern of ageing in the rest of the world. In addition, the effect of population ageing on world capital markets and current account balances could be important. Finally, contrary to the conventional view, countries that age more rapidly could benefit from an improvement in their current account for a certain period.
