Abstract

Este documento de trabajo presenta una tipología del suelo rural/urbano a partir del manejo de bases de datos de coberturas del suelo, en lugar del uso de información demográfica, que suele ser el procedimiento más habitual. El punto de partida es la idea de que los procesos de urbanización van acompañados de importantes transformaciones sobre el territorio que deben ser visibles de forma independiente a la presión demográfica. Como resultado intermedio del proceso de cálculo se genera información a nivel municipal del Sistema de Información de Ocupación del Suelo de España (SIOSE), que es susceptible de usos muy diversos a esta escala geográfica. La adopción de unos umbrales sobre porcentajes de espacios abiertos —superficies no artificiales— a nivel municipal permite establecer una tipología similar a la que se deriva de la actual metodología de Eurostat basada en densidades a partir de una grid de población. Los resultados deben ser vistos más como complementarios que como competitivos de las metodologías tradicionales, y susceptibles de ser incorporados en el futuro en una tipología rural/urbano que tenga en cuenta varias dimensiones.
