Zinvol werk: een goedkope oplossing voor de arbeidsmarkt?

Abstract

Werknemers hechten niet alleen belang aan hun loon, maar ook aan hoe ‘zinvol’ hun job is. In deze studie onderzoeken we in welke mate een zinvolle job kan helpen mensen te motiveren op de arbeidsmarkt. Een zinvolle job komt slechts op de zevende plaats in de lijst van jobkenmerken, en is minder belangrijk dan werkzekerheid en een billijk loon. Mensen zijn niet bereid loon in te leveren in ruil voor een meer zinvolle job. Dit contrasteert sterk met resultaten in vroegere experimenten. De nadruk leggen op de voordelen van een job voor de samenleving kan de looneisen doen toenemen. Mensen worden productiever wanneer ze beseffen dat hun werk een belangrijke bijdrage levert aan de samenleving.
