This paper presents a review of methodological research regarding issues that are pertinent to surveys involving longitudinal data collection, i.e. repeated measurement over time on the same units. The objective of the review is to identify important gaps in our knowledge of issues affecting the design and implementation of such surveys and the use of the data that they provide. This should help to inform the development of an agenda for future methodological research as well as serving as a useful summary of current knowledge. The issues addressed relate to sample design, missing data (as a result of item and unit non-response and attrition) and measurement error (including panel conditioning).
