El índice de precios al consumidor y el costo de la vida

Abstract

Este artículo tiene como objetivo ilustrar las diferencias en que se puede incurrir al estimar el aumento del costo de vida mediante el IPC, u otros índices de precios, con respecto al índice de precios verdaderos (IPV). Este índice es el que se debería usar si se quiere reajustar el ingreso de un individuo de manera que pueda acceder al mismo nivel de utilidad que tenía antes que los precios cambiaran. En cambio, si se reajusta por el IPC el individuo puede comprar la misma canasta que en el año base, lo que no es lo mismo que mantener su bienestar. En particular se discuten los efectos sobre el IPC de no considerar que la gente reduce el consumo de los bienes cuyos precios suben más, y de que tampoco toma debidamente en cuenta que la calidad de los bienes va aumentando con el tiempo.
