To illustrate some of these ideas the developments of the WWW in the Azores and in the Southwest of Ireland and the specific contribute that the tourism industry has in this process are used. An analysis of 55 web sites related to both regions, ranging from those produced by local owners of tourist accommodation, those constructed by transport companies in the regions to virtual tourist guides produced outside the two countries (Portugal and Ireland), is conducted. Particular attention is given to the role of local public administration in the processof representing and marketing both regions. The used methodology to select the sample of web sites relates to a comprehensive search through various international, national and regional virtual search engines, coupled with searches in virtual directories of both regions.
