Abstract

This paper presents an interpretation of the developments in the Brazilian regional disparities in the last fifty years. It relies on a view of the capitalist development in this periods to explain the recent reversion in the convergence of the per capita regional income. Its major hypothesis is that the end of the convergence must prevail for some time in the future, while the current development paradigm, relying strongly on human capital prevail and there is no change in the regional policies adopted by the Brazilian Federal government.
