This paper introduces and surveys ecological-economic analysis of biodiversity. It seeks to identify the complex linkages between economic and ecological systems with a view to a solid exploration of valuation issues in biodiversity. Against this background the study offers a review of key ecological concepts that are essential in building bridges between ecology and economics. Issues discussed here are ecosystem management principles, biodiversity indices and modern concepts such as resilience. Particular attention is given to various monetary valuation approaches and methods, from the perspective of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. For this purpose, the interrelation between biodiversity, resources, ecosystem functions, and human welfare is examined. The use of ecological and value indicators in integrated modelling and analysis is also addressed. Finally, several illustrative applications are presented in order to demonstrate the usefulness of the approaches discussed. Ultimately, this study offers a basis for biodiversity valuation approaches at the interface of economics and ecology.
