Abstract

In this paper we analyze self-reported satisfaction with life as a whole, termed well-being. Between basic variables, such as income, age, education, gender, etc., and well-being, we pose an intermediate level, viz., satisfactions with aspects of life. Basic variables affect the satisfactions of aspects of life, which in turn affect well-being.
This procedure leads to improved estimates of the total effect of basic variables on well-being and leads to a greater understanding as to how basic variables affect the lives of the respondents in our data set (the German Socio Economic Panel).
