Abstract

There are various economic models that address environmental problems. In this paper it is examined whether these can be applied to the analysis of materials flows. It is important to know which types of models may be chosen to deal with particular research questions addressing economic, environmental or physical aspects of materials flows. For this purpose five main categories of models are considered, namely economic models of natural resources, pollution models, environmental input-output models, macroeconomic models, and models with technological or evolutionary change. The main research questions related to the economics of materials flows are discussed for each model type, and some examples are given to illustrate how materials flows may be integrated in the models at hand.
