The hypothesis of utility maximization imposes well-know restrictions on demand equations. In this paper, we discuss the analogue of these conditions in discrete choice models. Recently, Borsch-Supan (1990) and Koning and Ridder (1991) have developed conditions on choice probabilities that ensure compatibility with utility maximization. These conditions are used to examine whether the choice of mode of payment is made rationally.
