    Abstract

    This article gives an overview of the recent developments in category management. The article is the result of a study carried out in 1995. In this study 13 companies were willing to share information. The study led to a better understanding of the intricacies of category management. It was shown that category management is a development taking place at the side of the retailer but also at the side of the manufacturer. Although the concepts are the same, in practice there are a large number of differences to be found. It was also shown that there is a large overlap between the concepts of category management and supply chain management. As a matter of fact, the category manager has a serious role in managing the supply chain.
