Abstract

Dans une course ˆ l'innovation, les possibilitŽs de rattrapage d'une entreprise distancŽe sont-elles aiguisŽes ou au contraire exclues par la prŽsence d'externalitŽs de R&D ? Pudenberg, Gilbert, Stiglitz et Tirole montrent dans une course au brevet avec observation imparfaite de l'activitŽ en R&D des entreprises rivales que ces possibilitŽs de rattrapage existent. Notre article introduit deux hypothses d'externalitŽs de diffusion du savoir-faire. Nous examinons ˆ l'Žquilibre, pour chacun d'eux, les consŽquences sur les possibilitŽs de rattrapage de la firme en retard. Dans un premier scŽnario, la part du savoir-faire acquis par chaque entreprise qui revient ˆ sa rivale est dŽcroissante : les possibilitŽs de rattrapage disparaissent ˆ l'Žquilibre. Dans un second scŽnario, le taux d'externalitŽ est constant : le rattrapage, mme rŽduit par le jeu des externalitŽs, reste possible ˆ l'Žquilibre. Nous concluons que dans ce contexte dynamique, les spillovers ont l'effet contre-intuitif d'augmenter la vitesse de l'innovation pour des firmes avec des niveaux d'expŽrience identiques. Nous mettons aussi en Žvidence qu'une modŽlisation diffŽrente des externalitŽs influence les possibilitŽs de rattrapage du retardataire.
