Structural interdependence between the European Union and the United States : Technological positions

Abstract

This paper examines the degree of economic interdependence between the United States and Europe and assesses the capacity of the two economic blocs to adapt to technological change and to seize the opportunities created by the high-tech sectors. After a description of the interdependence between the United States and the European Union in terms of trade and direct investment flows, a comparison is made of the economic importance and performance of high-, medium-, and low-tech sectors in the United States and the European Union. Finally, this classification based on technological intensity provides data for assessing the differences between the United States and the European Union in terms of corporate strategies and market structures.
