Abstract

This paper offers some new macroeconomic indicators for the analysis of the evolution of the external orientation of the Spanish economy from 1885 to 1985. Estimations of export and import growth, structural changes, and external financial flows show that in 1890-13 and 1938-60 a difference in practices in the use of tariffs, exchange rate regimes and exchange restrictions would have induced more desintegrating effect on the Spanish economy than in others during two periods of relative expansion of international economy.
