Abstract

Le concept de loi naturelle joue un rôle fondamental dans l'oeuvre de François Quesnay (1694-1774), fondateur de l'école des physiocrates, qui furent aussi les premiers à être nommés les économistes. Pour Quesnay, la société et l'économie, comme la nature, sont gérées par des lois universelles, qui s'appliquent en tout temps et en tout lieu. Ce texte fait d'abord un survol de l'évolution de cette notion avant les physiocrates. Il examine ensuite la position, à certains égards complexe et contradictoire, de Quesnay. Il montre ensuite comment les disciples de Quesnay ont accentué la tournure dogmatique des thèses du fondateur de la physiocratie, avant d'évoquer les critiques virulentes que ces thèses ont soulevées. Le débat entre une position universaliste et une position relativiste dans la conception du fonctionnement de l'économie se poursuit depuis ce temps, mais la conception physiocratique domine largement la pensée économique actuelle.
