Impacto socioeconómico del sector azucarero colombiano en la economía nacional y regional

Abstract

El sector azucarero colombiano juega un papel importante en el mercado mundial. Según los datos de la Organización Internacional del Azúcar (o i a), la producción de 2,28 millones de toneladas de azúcar durante 2007 ubicó a Colombia como el décimo tercer productor mundial. De la misma manera, con la exportación de 716 mil toneladas de azúcar el país se ubicó en ese ano en la décima posición de la lista de principales exportadores de este producto en el mundo. ¿Cuál ha sido la contribución de este sector en la economía colombiana y en la economía de su área de influencia?Este estudio identifica y cuantifica los impactos socioeconómicos generados por la actividad del sector azucarero en la economía colombiana y en la economía regional del valle geográfico del río Cauca. Para esto, el estudio presenta las metodologías y los resultados de una serie de ejercicios que incluyen el cálculo del efecto del sector en la economía nacional con la ayuda de la matriz insumo-producto del DANE y de la matriz de contabilidad social elaborada por el DANE y DNP, así como también comparaciones de diversos indicadores económicos y sociales a nivel regional, y el uso de técnicas econométricas para estimar el impacto regional del sector.
