China en el siglo XXI, su efecto en los mercados de metales industriales y las implicaciones para América Latina

Abstract

En los últimos 15 anos, China viene presentando tasas de crecimiento muy superiores a las del resto de los países. Su crecimiento ha venido acompanado por una apertura de su economía hacia el exterior y un proceso de rápida industrialización y urbanización. Todo esto ha impulsado la demanda mundial de bienes básicos. En particular, ha incrementado el consumo de metales industriales. En este escenario, América Latina se ha visto beneficiada al incrementar sus exportaciones. Sin embargo, frente al panorama de los últimos meses, donde los precios de los bienes básicos vienen cayendo rápidamente, se espera que el grueso de las economías latinoamericanas se vea seriamente afectado. El reto futuro de los países de la región es diversificar sus exportaciones hacia productos con mayor valor agregado, y así disminuir la dependencia de los bienes básicos, cuyos precios se encuentran fuera de su control.
