Abstract

En este trabajo se realiza una estimación de la Eficiencia X para una muestra trimestral, entre marzo de 1998 y diciembre de 2000, para 54 bancos latinoamericanos. Por medio de este ejercicio se busca comparar la eficiencia de los bancos colombianos respecto a la de bancos de otros países de la región. Las limitaciones de información hacen de este un ejercicio exploratorio, en el cual sólo se incluyen dos países además de Colombia (México y Costa Rica). Sin embargo, constituye el primer intento por realizar una comparación de Eficiencia X a nivel internacional para países latinoamericanos. Los resultados muestran que existe un alto grado de homogeneidad a nivel internacional, pero un alto grado de heterogeneidad a nivel nacional. También se encuentra que la eficiencia de los bancos colombianos ha venido en ascenso, respecto a sus homólogos de México y Costa Rica, durante el período en cuestión y que los niveles de vencimiento de la cartera, el tamaño de los bancos y las tasas de retorno, son determinantes de la eficiencia bancaria.
