Crecimiento Económico y Gasto Público: Una Interpretación de las Experiencias Internacionales y del Caso Colombiano (1982-1999)

Abstract

En este documento se presentan los resultados de la estimación econométrica del modelo de gasto público y crecimiento económico de Barro (1990). La estimación fue de tipo panel utilizando datos de frecuencia anual de 83 países (con poblaciones mayores a 2 millones en 1980) a lo largo del período 1982- 1999. Cuando se juzgan los crecimientos del gasto público y del producto tanto de Colombia como de otros países de ingreso medio a la luz de las estimaciones del modelo surge una conclusión: el gasto público colombiano se volvió excesivo durante la segunda mitad de los años 90 y, por tanto, contribuyó a la reducción de la tasa de crecimiento de la economía.
