Abstract

A pesar del fin de la Guerra Fría en Europa, y la desaparición de la amenaza que la URSS representaba para los Estados Unidos, la promoción de la democracia continuó siendo una pieza central de la política exterior estadounidense. Sin embargo, dicha promoción adquirió un matiz netamente diferente. El presente trabajo busca identificar los factores e intereses tras la doctrina de “Democratic Enlargement” elaborada por la Administración Clinton. A tal fin, se centrará exclusivamente en el análisis de la misma y se preguntará lo siguiente: ¿Porqué la Administración Clinton basó su política exterior hacia América Latina en “Democratic Enlargement”? Razones estratégicas, ideológicas y económicas son revisadas por G. Herrera a lo largo del presente trabajo, buscando los motivos profundos de la Doctrina Clinton.
