Abstract

América Latina durante el siglo XIX y parte importante del XX fue testigo de los permanentes conflictos armados entre las repúblicas latinoamericanas por disputas territoriales. Estos se iniciaron con la ocupación de espacios despoblados, haciendo uso de ellos de títulos históricos emanados durante el proceso de conquista y colonia. Chile y Argentina no fueron la excepción, con la salvedad que el establecimiento de los límites bilaterales, no llegaron a desencadenar una guerra. No obstante lo anterior, las negociaciones entre ambos países entre 1881 y 1902 se mantuvieron permanentemente en el filo de la amenaza y la agresión. La idea central era demostrar la capacidad de ejercer el poder nacional frente a otro Estado. Las discusiones que derivaron en el Protocolo de 1893, así lo demuestran.
