En los albores de la posguerra y a instancias de EEUU, es creada la OTAN, alianza político militar que legitimiza el poderío estadounidense con sus aliados europeos occidentales en el marco de la naciente Guerra Fría.Durante décadas la alianza se centró en sus objetivos prioritarios: la defensa colectiva de sus miembros establecida en el artículo V y la contención del adversario soviético. Sin embargo, en las postrimerias del siglo XX se enfrenta a un doble desafio: la ampliación más extensa y contundente de toda la historia y la redefinición de su función estratégica, en función de las nuevas amenazas del sistema internacional.
