En la última década del siglo XX, se han observado crisis financieras en los denominados países emergentes, que han repercutido en todo el sistema internacional.- Entre los orígenes de estas crisis se cuentan distintos factores. En primer lugar, a comienzo de los años noventa, las bajas tasas de interés en los países avanzados por recomendación de la Reserva Federal de los Estados Unidos, impulsó que muchos inversionistas salieron al exterior en busca de mayor rentabilidad. Los fondos de inversión acuñaron un nombre nuevo para lo que antes se llamaba Tercer Mundo, o países en desarrollo: ahora serían “mercados emergentes”, la nueva frontera de la oportunidad financiera.-
