La estrategia fue considerada durante mucho tiempo, como una actividad relacionada exclusivamente con el campo de las operaciones militares. Ello se debió, seguramente a que sus primeros pensadores provenían de ese ámbito, quienes buscaban la forma de poner algún orden intelectual, de ello ser posible, en su disciplina. Así, desde Sun Tzu a la fecha, se sigue aún buscando la manera de ordenar el pensamiento estratégico. Pero su estudio se ha ampliado para incluir a las decisiones de naturaleza política / diplomática / seguridad / defensa / económicas / educativas / empresariales, etc., con el riesgo de abusar el concepto y variarlo decontenido.
