Poverty and Globalization: Problem and Solution, or Two Sides of the Same Medal?

Abstract

The debate about globalization is heavy and ongoing, among proponents and opponents as well as among scholars of different backgrounds and at the global arena as well as in more intimate meetings places of humans. Much of that debate is related to the issue of global poverty, across as well as within nations. While a meaningful understanding of globalization is nevertheless far from established (not to speak about a consensual one), the connection between globalization and poverty is even more a particular source of conflict, focusing on the question, if the former helps to alleviate or even aggravates the latter. The paper thus seeks to develop a distinct understanding of globalization in the context of poverty (which cannot be restricted to economics), and it will explain historically the relationship between the two along the most extreme form of poverty, hunger, over the last two centuries.This paper was presented at the 16th International Conference of the International Trade and Finance Association at the University of Lodz, Poland, in May 2006.
