La mortalidad y desnutrición infantil en La Guajira

Abstract

Los fallecimientos de niños wayuu asociados a la desnutrición son motivo de preocupación nacional. El debate ha enfatizado el mal manejo de los recursos por los guajiros, pero la problemática se origina en múltiples factores de carácter estructural y coyuntural. Es importante revisar la realidad social y económica de La Guajira, cuyas características geográficas dificultan la seguridad alimentaria en el territorio. Este departamento posee condiciones geográficas que frenan la producción agrícola, tiene una población rural dispersa y un atraso histórico en las condiciones sanitarias y el acceso a agua potable. Es una economía de frontera que históricamente ha desarrollado intercambios con el Gran Caribe y Venezuela, con una baja integración a los circuitos económicos nacionales. A pesar de esta problemática, la definición de unas políticas de salud preventivas efectivas podrían contribuir a mitigar la situación. Estudiar todos estos factores permitiría definir soluciones integrales.
