Abstract

Tras el éxito de la creación de la Unión Económica y Monetaria, el proceso de integración en Europa se encuentra a las puertas de un nuevo avance cualitativo con la adhesión de diez países de Europa del Este a la Unión Europea (UE). Ello supondrá incrementar en un 19 por ciento la población y en un 5 por ciento el PIB de la Unión, si bien la mayor relevancia procede principalmente de su impacto político. En este artículo se realiza un análisis descriptivo de la estructura social y económica de estos diez países, con especial referencia a la estabilidad macroeconómica, los avances en las reformas estructurales y el grado de desarrollo del sistema financiero, elementos clave para el éxito en dos de los objetivos más relevantes, la adopción del euro y la convergencia real. Adicionalmente, se evalúan los retos a los que se enfrentará en los próximos años la UE ampliada. Entre ellos destacan la reducción de la brecha productiva con EE.UU. sobre la base de la creación de empleo y del fomento de la innovación, el fortalecimiento de las instituciones comunitarias como garantía del correcto funcionamiento de las políticas monetaria y fiscal y la garantía de una plena integración de sus sociedades-
