Abstract

This work analyses the evolution of relative Per Capita Income distribution, Literacy Rates, Years of Study and Longevity of Brazilian municipalities. The estimation of transition matrices, methodology developed in Quah (1993b), modeled the national, regional and intra-regional convergence pattern for the period 1970 to 2000. The changes in the Brazilian municipality structure demanded the grouping of Municipalities into Minimal Comparable Areas (MCA). The results revealed convergence for the variables related to education, but convergence in clubs for the Per Capita Income and Longevity. The low income club is formed by the North and Northeast MCA, that presented approximately one third of the long term Per Capita Income in the high income club, formed by the Center- West, South and Southeast. The longevity is converging to three clubs: a subtle higher level in the South and Southeast MCA, an intermediary level in the Center-West and North MCA and a low level in the Northeast MCA.
