Abstract

Since the nineties German enterprises have significantly expanded their direct investments in the industrialised countries. They preferred business locations with higer economic growth and lower labour costs compared to Germany. The geographic distance, the development of German exports into the respective countries, EU-membership and the economic risk abroad also influenced invetment decisions. Relocation of production and services facilities to other countries is likely to continue in the near future. In case of weak economic growth of ther German economy and high production costs several western industrialised countries (e.g. United States and United Kingdom) and also the new EU-accession countries offer attractive locations for German companies.
