Abstract

En el capítulo estudiamos la intervención en el mercado cambiario, así como cuáles son los países que típicamente implementan la política de intervención, las razones por las que se cree que la intervención puede o no funcionar y un modelo de portafolio que explica el funcionamiento de la intervención en el mercado cambiario. La intervención activa en el mercado cambiario es generalizada en las economías emergentes y tiene origen tanto en la volatilidad macroeconómica como en los objetivos de tasa de cambio. Entretanto, la intervención en los países desarrollados es por lo general aislada o esporádica. El instrumento de la intervención es el de las operaciones a la vista en el mercado cambiario. El mecanismo por el cual funciona una intervención esterilizada es el canal de portafolio. El modelo de equilibrio de portafolio permite estudiar el efecto sobre la tasa de cambio del movimiento internacional del capital y de la intervención esterilizada en el mercado cambiario.
