Universidades de clase mundial e indicadores de competitividad económica de los países

Abstract

Esta comunicación establece una relación entre las universidades de clase mundial y los indicadores de competitividad del Foro Económico Mundial (WEF) para los países. Para las universidades se acude a los dos principales rankings: Times Higher Education Suplement (THES), con 200 universidades y AcademicRanking WorldUniversities (ARWU), establecido por la universidad JiaoTong de Shangai, que considera 500 instituciones. En los países se realiza una clasificación de acuerdo a las cinco etapas de competitividad del WEF. Con ellas se hicieron dos agrupaciones, la primera integra los países de la etapa III, con orientación hacia la sofisticación de los negocios y a las actividades de innovación. Un segundo grupo se formó con los países ubicados en las restantes cuatro etapas. Las preguntas de investigación son: cómo se distribuyen las universidades de clase mundial en esos dos grupos de países, donde están ubicadas estas instituciones, el grado de concentración existente en los países del grupo I y cuáles son las características de las universidades ubicadas en ambos grupos de países. En el THES, en promedio, el 93% de las universidades se encuentran en los países del grupo I, observándose un alto grado de concentración en estos países y con ello, una alta concentración en la producción de conocimiento. Se hace una comparación de medias de los indicadores de competitividad de ambos grupos de países y se busca la relación de las universidades de clase mundial con los pilares de la competitividad. Para el ARWU, además de llevar cabo una comparación de medias de los indicadores de competitividad, se hace un análisis del comportamiento de los seis indicadores de este ranking para establecer qué tipo de diferencias existen entre las universidades del primero y segundo grupo de países.
