Abstract

Das Jahr 2020 war vom Ausbruch und der globalen Verbreitung von COVID-19 geprägt. Obwohl sich das Virus im Jänner und Februar 2020 noch nicht stark in Europa ausgebreitet hatte, litten die europäischen Wertschöpfungsketten bereits unter Produktions- und Lieferausfällen in und aus Asien – allen voran China. Ab Mitte Februar erfasste die Pandemie auch Europa und die USA. Die Politik musste mit gesundheitspolitischen Maßnahmen reagieren, die vor allem die Bewegungs- und Verkehrsfreiheit drastisch einschränkten und somit große Teile des Wirtschaftslebens zum Stillstand brachten. Die Folge war ein wirtschaftlicher Abschwung in einer seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs nicht mehr beobachteten Größenordnung. Laut OECD dürfte das weltweite BIP 2020 im Vorjahresvergleich um 4,3% gesunken sein. Für Österreich rechnet das WIFO in seiner Prognose vom Dezember 2020 mit einem Einbruch um rund 7,3%.
