Abstract

The document summarises the results of twenty years of coordination of research programmes on urban food supply in Africa and Asia in collaboration with national researchers. The main research questions are the following ones: What is the role of geographical and relational proximity in the performance of food chains in Africa and Asia? Does modern distribution change food chains in favour of the less wealthy stakeholders? The research is based on spatial economics, economics of rural organisations and global value chain analysis. The results show the role of geographical proximity in the supply of perishable commodities in line with Von Thünen predictions. We identify the role of relational proximity in reducing uncertainties in terms of quantity, price and quality, which the sellers and buyers of food commodities must face. Future research areas are presented, including a deeper evaluation of economic, environmental and social impact of proximity agriculture relative to more distant food supplying areas.
