    Abstract

    A pesar de que Colombia posee fronteras marítimas en el Caribe, un departamento archipiélago con las características de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina, y una costa caribeña de 1.600 kilómetros, son muy escasos tanto el conocimiento como los estudios académicos que nuestros analistas realizan sobre esta área geográfica. Por eso, la Facultad considera que este libro, en el que participan académicos de diversas nacionalidades, y pertenecientes a variadas disciplinas y aproximaciones a la realidad interna y externa del Caribe, constituye un valioso aporte al conocimiento de una región que es tan diversa, que en el pasado fuera escenario de enfrentamientos entre las principales potencias, y que resulta relevante para las nuevas y futuras tendencias de la globalización.
